Cowley College to hold Girls Talk Tech Summer Program

Thanks to a grant that was funded by the Kansas Board of Regents to provide exposure for women in fields of technology, Cowley College’s Career and Technical Education Department will hold a Girls Talk Tech Summer Program on June 16.

The program, for girls entering grades 9-11, will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no cost to take part in the event and lunch will be provided.

"Technical programs provide career & educational opportunities for women in a variety of fields,” said Sandy Randel, Cowley College’s coordinator for the Career and Technical Education Department. “This program will provide a fun, hands-on exposure to different technical areas that young women may not have considered."

Several Cowley instructors will be on hand to demonstrate different forms of technology.

“Career and Technical Education has changed considerably with the implementation of the Technical Authority,” said Bruce Crouse, Department Chair of the Career and  Technical Education Department. “Raising awareness of technical careers through innovative programs and focusing on non-traditional students is one of a number of initiates that will be coming from the Technical Authority.”

The program will feature:

  • What is Technology – Brett Butler
  • The Technology Game – Sandy Randel
  • Welding Fashion – Bob Moffatt (laser & plasma cam)
  • Smart Cars – Chris Parrott (vehicle control systems)
  • Around the World – Dan Squires (machining design)
  • Save a Life – Slade Griffiths
  • Mr. Roboto – Sandy Randel (building robots)
  • The Vision of the Future – Joe Clasen (real-time digital radiography)

To sign-up for the summer program, contact Mendy Pfannenstiel at 441-5279, or e-mail her at pfannenstiel@cowley.edu.
