Journalism

Students learn to gather, write, and edit accurate news and information. They also learn to design and distribute new publications. Cowley's journalism program provides both classroom experiences and hands-on involvement, including the chance to contribute to The Cowley Press student newspaper and its corresponding online edition at www.cowleypress.com. The curriculum includes courses in photography, news reporting and mass media, as well as opportunities for training in advertising and multimedia presentations for the web. Students who have selected a transfer college should consult the catalog of that school and an academic advisor for that college's requirements.

In Cowley's journalism curriculum, incoming freshmen can immediately contribute to student publications, and all staff members have access to the computer lab and digital darkroom facilities.

Cowley offers a challenging journalism curriculum. The basic Mass Media and Society course is designed for students considering journalism as a career. The course will acquaint you with media for communicating public information and entertainment. The News Reporting class covers the principles of news writing. Introduction to Photography provides an understanding of modern photography through lecture and computer lab practice.

Additional training is available through the journalism internship program. Students can work for area news agencies while receiving academic credit.
